Polam Hall Pupils Spread a Little Sunshine

Polam Hall pupils have brought a flavour of SW19 to DL1 by holding a Wimbledon-themed event to help bridge the generation gap.

Over 40 elderly people were invited, via Age Concern and the Darlington Town Mission, to the Polam Hall School Sunshine Party, which aims to promote understanding between different age groups.
.
Students from the Lower Sixth organised the event with the support of boys and girls from year 10. The students greeted the guests, served them afternoon tea and entertained them with a mix of music, a quiz and bingo.

To reflect the time of year, the party had a Wimbledon theme which involved decorations in the dining room including bunting, flowers and Wimbledon posters and guests being served strawberries and cream – the all England Lawn Tennis Club’s traditional fayre.

Marie Green, Polam Hall School Head Teacher, said: “The students worked very hard to ensure everything went well for their guests, organising the whole afternoon themselves.

“It is important that our pupils contribute to the wider community. The Sunshine Party is an ideal way for people from different age groups to engage with each other and learn about each other’s interests, ways of life and opinions.”

Pupils' Artistic Talents on Display

A Polam Hall School pupil has been offered work experience at leading high-end clothing retailers after being spotted by a fashion guru.

Becky Patterson is being mentored by Andy Scott, founder of the Bank fashion store chain, after he came across her work through an acquaintance.

As a result, the teenager is going to undertake some work experience with Red or Dead and Rare Fashion during the summer. She is planning to go to Northumbria University to study Fashion Marketing and Entrepreneurship.

Becky, Head Student until Easter 2011, was among 21 Polam Hall students who staged an Art and Music evening at the Darlington School.

The GCSE, AS and A-level pupils displayed a variety of work including craft, design, technology and photography. The evening also included musical performances.

Another student, Nicola Race had an unusual piece in her exhibition – she designed a metal-framed skirt, which was turned into a reality by her father’s roofing company.

Marie Green, Polam Hall School’s head teacher, said: “Becky and Nicola are examples of the artistic talent that we are proud to cultivate and develop at Polam Hall School.

“All of those taking part in the music and art exhibition have demonstrated their artistic flair and we are delighted that Polam Hall’s ‘excellence for all’ philosophy has enabled their creative talent to flourish.”
